as you wander down a hidden, cobbled path, a gentle glow catches your eye — a small atelier tucked between towering trees and cloaked in mist. above the door, a wooden sign swings gently.inside, shelves lined with glowing milk potions and curious trinkets stretch to the ceiling, each vial labeled with strange symbols and shimmering in glitter hues of pink and gold.

The Book of A Weary Traveler’s Safe Haven

The Atelier in The Mist

Written By: Fontaine Argalion

“Come and drink your milk, my child.”The elderly woman dribbled a spoonful of sweet milk into my mouth. My parched throat had difficulty swallowing, as I’ve not had any food nor drink in the past days that I’ve been stranded.“That’s it. Just a little bit of magical milk brew, and you’ll grow back up to your healthy, happy self!”A little more into my gullet, and I could feel all the weariness and fatigue fade away. “...Ah.” My eyes and ears perked up. I shook and stretched around, finding myself in a small and peculiar place.“Welcome, darling. Are you feeling better?”
“Where… am I?”
“You’re in my humble atelier, dearie. What’s a young one like you doing on the streets, I wonder?”
“Mmmph…it’s…”
She eyed me from head to toe, and nodded. “I see… It’s okay, dearie. I’ve seen that you’ve gone through some… some stuff. It’s alright if you don’t want to talk about it.”I simply nodded. I do not want to recall all of the events that had happened which prompted me to run away as far as I can from the facility I was imprisoned in.

“Here, please finish another bottle of milk. It’s a special little brew that I make for those who have lost their way and are too tired to keep moving.”She handed over another milk bottle. Being that we’re in quite a dark room, the milk bottle itself seemed to glow, slightly illuminating my hands that held the bottle. Drinking the contents, my heart seemed to feel at ease, content with the sensation that overwhelmed my taste buds.“Mmm... mmm! This is delicious...”The woman smiled, and she helped me recover from all of my injuries within just a day. She took me in, trained me in her arts being someone who owns a magic atelier. She taught me everything, from creating her magical milk brews, to other arts and life lessons that I needed to survive in life. Before I knew it, I grew up working at her atelier, until it was my time to inherit it.“Master...” I held back my tears as my master, now aged by the years, was smiling while holding her suitcase.

“Hmhm. It feels like it was only yesterday that I taught you how to create our magical milk brews, and now, you’re taking over the atelier! I’m so proud of how you turned out to be, my child.”“Uwaaah! Master!” I could no longer keep myself composed and hugged my master one last time. She hugged me back and cusped my cheeks.“What you do with the atelier, and all the knowledge and wisdom I’ve passed onto you is all up to you now. I only pray that you can spread the kindness and the joy of our trade to the world in a meaningful way.”With that, she broke the hug and made her way towards the door where a carriage was waiting. She was off to depart to a resting home where magicians retire until they pass on from this world. As I waved goodbye, I stared at the empty and desolate atelier all left to my own hands.Don’t worry master, I’ll make sure to return the kindness that you’ve shared with me with the world.

“Hey there! Another round?”The man sprawled over the countertop of my bar nodded with a groan. I went near him and poured a second helping of my special milk brew. “So, tell me, what brings you here?”“Hngh... I dunno why I even... Bothered to set out on this adventure, anyway...”He rambled on about his troubles while taking swigs of the drink in his hand.“I just wanted to prove myself to my peers, my relatives, and, and that hot princess of the kingdom, so I took this stupid quest for riches, and... and...!” And just like that, he burst to tears.“I don’t even want to be here! I’m too scared that I’ll die out there if I get mugged, or, or if I encounter scary monsters! I want to go home!”
“Then... why not go home?”
“I can’t... they’d shame me for returning empty-handed.”
He gulped down the contents of his mug then huffed. “Another one, please. Whatever you’re putting in these drinks... it’s good.” “Hee hee, alright then.”

I gave him a sweet smile and poured one more round of my special milk brew. This one should do the trick...
“Glg... gah... Huh.” He stood up and limbered up “But maybe... I should go take a chance on it.”
“Take a chance on what?”
“On adventuring. It... It may be perilous, but...”
“Who says that your adventure has to be perilous, dear traveler?”
He stopped in his tracks, dumbfounded. “Huh? What do you mean?”“Well, it’s just that there are many other ways you can prove yourself without putting yourself in grave danger. Say, for instance, a quest to run a mercantile business! You don’t have to slay monsters and claim riches, you just have to make your own!”A sparkle ran across the eyes of the man. “You’re right... you’re right!” He slammed down his glass and puffed out his chest triumphantly. “I don’t need the approval of my peers, or some stupid princess! I’ll do this all for myself!”“Hee hee, that’s the spirit!”

He took my hand, much to my surprise, and shook it. His grip was strong, but I think that’s partly because of my special milk brew.“Thank you, barkeep! I’ll return again soon once I’ve made my fortune!”After settling his tab for all the refreshments he bought, he made his way out with a smile, re-energized and pumped up for his quest ahead. And that, my friends, is another traveler I’ve helped revive their weary spirits, all thanks to the magical drinks that we exclusively brew here at my atelier. This is what became of the atelier that my master has passed onto me. I’ve turned it into a rest stop where adventurers of all kinds, who’ve been tired and weary in their travels, could help refresh their spirits and keep their heads up for the road ahead!Just as my master helped me to keep on living, I too shall return the favor for everyone else!

“...”“Is the milk not to your liking?”“...No, it’s not that. I just feel as if... the milk itself makes me feel at home.”“Is that so? Then I’m glad. That’s just one of the principles that my master has taught me when brewing our special milk!”“I see...” It must’ve been like, what, around the fifth bottle I’ve drank since I came to this place alongside what the book calls ‘The Atelier in The Mist'.“Is... Is there anything else that I can get you? Another round maybe...?”“No, I think I’ve drank my fill.”“I see...” The barkeep was looking at me expectantly, as if she was anticipating something from me.“...Is there something on my face?”“Oh, goodness, no! Was I staring too much? Sorry, It’s just that, um...”

Her tails swayed nervously. She didn’t do anything to these drinks, did she?“It’s just that normally, people would’ve been revitalized with a smile after drinking their own fill of our milk. I guess I’m just worried.”“Worried about what?”“That I’m losing touch with crafting our special milk brew. You, um, don’t really look revitalized. N-No offense!”“Hmm...” It’s true, I did feel much better after traveling to this world, but all the stress in restoring each of the worlds that’s been affected by the disaster has taken quite the irreversible toll on my mental state. I guess my expressions didn’t change, but I do feel less fatigued after having downed a lot of milk. After all, this was my favorite beverage, and it tasted better than the usual ones that I drank back when things were, y’know, not on the verge of dying out.A small smile curled on the side of my lip after much reflection. I fished out a huge bag of coins to settle my tab.“Thank you, it helped quite a lot. I may not show it, but I feel as if... I can keep continuing on to this path ahead that I have to take.”“O-Oh! I see! Okay, well, I’m glad my special brew has managed to help you out! If I may ask though... what is it that you’re facing ahead?”I fell silent, and kept my smile up as a facade.“...Just a job to save those in danger. But for today, I felt as if a portion of my sanity was saved, thanks to you.”
